In which we unwillingly depart Basque country

And the final day of our Biarritz trip: St. Jean-de-Luz, which was only mildly less touristy than Biarritz. No casino, which helped, but I get the feeling it’s the kind of town that tourists go to to get the “small-town” experience.

But we did! We went to their weekly market, bought fruit and bread and cheese and macarons, and clothes and fun stuff (I bought a lovely silver ring for 4 Euro), and went to have a picnic before wandering through the town. It's a gorgeous place.

Like Biarritz, St Jean is on the coast. I loved this boat in the harbor.

Here, have a close-up of the buildings on the other side of the harbor. I don’t know what they are, but they’re kind of unbelievable. Also, all the boats look like models – those colors!

Wonderful harbor storage building thing. I love how even this has a red tile roof. Also love the pilings going into the water.

These people are, believe it or not, somehow involved in local government. This is what they wear to meetings. Seriously, can I live here?

Lovely street-side café. We all met up at one at the end of the afternoon, and I ordered a lemonade, which was basically a glass of lemon juice with ice and packets of sugar. It was delicious.

This is Julia. She ALWAYS wears shirts like that, and was so excited to find this shop, but heartbroken that it was closed. (She was the one with the espadrilles, last post. A little set in her ways of casual comfort, is Julia. She is also awesome.)

One of the narrower but still typical streets in St. Jean.

The end of that street; it brings you right up to the beach.

Which, speaking of the beach! We spent about an hour here after lunch. It was beautiful.

There, across the water, is some sort of fort. Megan walked there while we were lounging on the beach. We were too in love with the water to leave, so here, have a bunch of photos:

This photo is titled "invitation," because that's what it is: the colors and the waves, all blending into each other, just pull you right out into the horizon.

I love that cliff, and the way the ground is all green rolling hills right up until it hits the rocks, where it looks like it was cut off.

Apparently I can’t take level photos. Honestly? This is pretty enough that I don’t care.

That building, right there? It’s a castle. It has a tower. I want to live there. I don’t even need the whole place; one room in the tower would do.

She’s adorable. And this photo just goes to show that no one, no matter their age, can resist the lure of the water.

And that was our trip to Basque country. I hope you enjoyed it; I certainly did.
